A 1-day guided hiking tour to Mount Ara. Situated between the rivers of Kasagh and Hrazdan, about 40 kilometers from Yerevan, Mount Ara has an elevation of 2577 meters above sea level. It's a stratovolcanic cone with andesite-basalt and basalt rock formations and volcanic stones. Mount Ara is home to over 650 species of plants, some are unique to the mountain, and many are used in traditional medicine. On our way up to the summit, we'll learn the edible plants and will collect thyme to brew delicious fragrant tea. Being relatively easy to hike, the Ara mountain is a popular destination among local and foreign hikers and adventure travelers.
The mount derives its name from Ara the Beautiful, a legendary Armenian king who refused to marry the Assyrian queen Semiramis. Enraged, the queen declared war on Ara, hoping to capture him. But Ara fell in the battle. Semiramis placed his body on top of the mountain and prayed to spirits to bring him back to life, but nothing helped. And it is believed that Ara's body is still there on the mountain. When looked from a certain angle, the ridge of the mountain resembles a man's prone face.
On the way back from the summit, we will walk to the crater to visit the shrine of Virgin Varvara. Carved into the rock, this small shrine is a famous pilgrimage destination. The sacred water from its natural spring is believed to be healing and benefits the eyesight.
